Heart rate monitors when used correctly are a great accessory to aid your fitness development. However, without knowing what to look for they can just be a pretty fashion accessory that go with sweat bands and the newest nike trainers. This article is hear to help you to not be the person who has "all the gear, with no idea".
firstly, lets get started by only using the chest strap monitors, these are the most accurate at higher intensities. Watches, fingertip, and ear monitors, although look good and have some cool things for tracking calories and Social media, are not very good at tracking heart rate at high intensities. So try to get one like the picture above. I have a Pola h7 which connects up to my phone so I can use the app on my phone to track it. I use the Pola beat app, however there are many good ones out there. Alternatively you can use the strap monitors with some of the cool watches to track your heart rate. If you are trying a strap out that isn't brand new, make sure you wet the electrodes before attaching it to your chest and makes sure the batteries are working.
Right we are ready to be part of the cool crowd at the gym. So to save you from just watching it and saying "that looks good" I have listed the ways to use it below:
1) Track your Minimum/ Maximum Hear Rate
2) Track your Metabolic Threshold (also known as anaerobic/ Lactate threshold)
3) Track your time to recover
4) see which Zone you are working in (% of Heart rate max).
5) Track your Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
